New France-Why North America? Assignment

1. Choose two of the bullet points above (one from each section) and research them online. Collect your notes into a blog entry.
 -Profit from furs
  • Fur trade in Canada began instead of the fishing industry.
  • Europeans were impressed with the native peoples fur.
  • The Europeans were having scarce quality and amounts of fur.
  • Native people, for their part,  were interested in exchanging furs for European metal and cloth goods. 
  • This new trading made much profit.
-  Settlement in Port Royal
  • By Spring 1605, a colony began which Champlain had named Port-Royal. This would  become the first permanent French settlement in Canada. 
  • Enough money was found to send supplies and reinforcements to Port-Royal.
  • They found land at Port Royal that was fertile and healthy to plant crops. 

2. Research Samuel de Champlain and write a short biography. Post the biography to your blog.

      Samuel de Champlain was born on or before August 13 1574 but is not known for sure although he was baptized on that day. He was born and baptized Brouage or La Rochelle, Aunis, France. He died on December 25, 1635 at the age of 61 in Quebec, Canada, New France. He was also known as "The Father Of France" and he was a French navigator, cartographer, draughtsman, soldier, explorer, geographer, ethnologist, diplomat, and chronicler. He founded New France and Quebec City on July 3, 1608. He is important to Canadian history because he made the first accurate map of the coast and he helped establish the settlements.
